In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Assalam-o-Alaikum w.r.t.b Dear Community Members,
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon. (“Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return.”) ~ Quran.
We are extremely saddened and troubled to receive the news of mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand, where 49 Muslim Brothers and Sisters are martyred and many others are in critical condition. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described it as “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.”
While we don’t believe there are active threats in Canadian locations, we encourage our community to remain vigilant and to contact law enforcement immediately if they encounter anything suspicious. We ask all people of conscience to stand up against hate, to hold people, from politicians to news pundits, accountable for their hateful rhetoric and to actively advocate for a world free of hate.
We will have extra security at Islamic Center of Markham (Masjid Darul Iman) for Friday prayers and in the coming days. The ICM management have taken the following measure with regard to security and reached out to York Region Police to increase patrol around the mosque:
• We have hired security guards at the entrance and exits.
• There will be York Region Police Department (YRP) presence on the ICM site and additional patrol around ICM facilities
• ICM is closely monitoring the situation and will coordinate with other organizations for any additional support
We pray to Allah SWT that He bestows His infinite grace upon the victims, give patience and the strength to the families and the Muslim community in New Zealand and everywhere to overcome this tragedy. Ameen!
